With the arrival of some sunny weather, it’s a great time to think about doing a little Spring home maintenance.  Travelers, our warranty provider, makes the following recommendations for spring upkeep:

  •  Clean and check sump
  • Check grades around house and fill in low areas
  • Check exterior caulking and re-caulk if necessary
  • Clean gutters and downspouts
  • Check roof for defects
  • Re-caulk showers and counter tops if necessary
  • Lubricate door hinges

Happy Sunny Spring!

Leanna, our designer, is part of our staff.   She works with us to take your dream home concept and put it on paper.   Our house plans are uniquely designed for our customers and by having a designer as a team member, we can easily and simply make changes during the design process.   We will design what you want with your budget in mind.

Exciting possibilities accompany the second half of life.  The children have left home and you are facing the reality of a new life season.

Many couples are ready to downsize when the kids leave home.  However, entertaining friends, weekly family dinners, and space for visiting grandchildren are still a very high priority!  Master bedroom on the main floor, laundry room conveniently close, and open spaces for visiting guests are more important than ever.

Our Horizon Homes specialize in one level living.  At the design stage we carefully consider your unique needs for designing a home that will be suitable for you for many years to come.   Some of the standard features we include:

If you wish, we will design a specific closet that could later be incorporated into an elevator shaft in the event a wheel chair is brought into the home.

Typical doorways are 36” as opposed to 30” to allow plenty of space for moving furniture and wheel chair access.

We design 43” hallways that feel wider, less confining, and more comfortable.

We build our stairs wider – typically 42” wide – for a roomier, more comfortable and less confining stairwell.

For extra security measures, we ensure an alarm pad is placed in the Master Bedroom and in the garage near the door leading into your home

We specifically ensure we minimize the number of steps into the front entry of our homes, and from the garage into the home.

These are just some of the design features we place in our Horizon homes.  By doing so, we ensure you are able to enjoy your home for a long time.

Testing for Air Leakage

Add up all the cracks, gaps and other openings in your house and chances are the total air leakage area is about the size of a dart board.  That means you are spending a lot of cash heating the outdoors!

Each Sonbuilt home is tested for air leakage using a fan door test.  Our homes always test less than 1.5 air changes per hour. The average home built by most builders is 6.2!  By using an HRV (heat recovery ventilator), we keep fresh air circulating but not escaping through numerous cracks.

Kitchen ideal for entertaining

Leanna, our designer, recently attended a seminar promoting the concept of the “Live-In” kitchen.  Kitchens have become a multi-purpose space, frequently centered in the midst of the great room.

Do you enjoy entertaining?  Is your kitchen the hub of family life?

We often design our kitchens into large open areas where entertaining, family activities, conversation, and food are all centered into one convenient living space.  A space that’s large enough for entertaining plenty of guests, yet intimate to encourage family board games or homework.

Ask us about what we recommend for your dream kitchen!

Garage Workspace

Has your garage become your workshop?

For many families the garage is a multipurpose area for vehicle parking, storage, and Saturday afternoon projects.  When we design your home, we will ensure your garage is designed and built in a way that is adequate for your needs.

  • We will ensure it’s heated if you wish.  Just in case a workbench is added in the future, we always place a couple of plugs above a workbench height to accommodate future benches.
  • If needed, we will place a charging electrical outlet for an electrical car in your garage.
  • As a standard practice, we install fluorescent lighting in garages to ensure adequate lighting in all areas. Our garages are insulated and fully finished.  We’ll even paint the floors if you wish!
  • We use T-12 or higher insulated steel garage doors delivering quality door construction and year round thermal efficiency. If we are aware in advance of your vehicle sizes, we will endeavor to design garage space to accommodate your vehicle needs.
  • We use a belt driven system for the garage door opener that is both quiet and smooth running so you don’t need to be concerned about noise if you have rooms positioned above your garage.
  • Our garage slabs slope a minimum of 3” to ensure water coming off your vehicle drains away quickly.
